ELLIPTICAL BUYING GUIDE
What to look for when purchasing an Elliptical
Why an elliptical trainer
Elliptical trainers are the fastest growing category in fitness equipment and are a very popular choice for at home exercising. They are easy to use and provide a full body workout, while minimizing impact on the lower body.
Who will be using the elliptical trainer?
When determining what model of elliptical trainer is best suited for you, it is important to consider your level of fitness, as well as your fitness goals - recreational or weight loss. If you are a rigorous daily trainer, look for a solid construction with more features, including programs that adjust stride to target different muscle groups, as well as varying resistance and incline degrees to increase your workout intensity. For novices, look for a natural stride and be sure to test out the machine for at least ten minutes before buying it.
Where will you use the machine?
When determining the best spot for your elliptical trainer, make sure you allow for easy access and enough space at the back end of the trainer in case you slip or fall while on the unit. Front drive models take up a smaller footprint if space is a concern, but usually require more ceiling height. Rear drive units are more popular especially if space is not a concern.
How much do you want to invest?
The rule of thumb states ... you absolutely get what you pay for. If you plan to use your elliptical trainer every day, you can count on your $4k purchase lasting you for 10 to 15 years, if not longer if properly maintained. The higher quality and priced machines provide you with a heavier, thus smoother flywheel, greater range of resistance, longer and/or adjustable stride length, higher user weight capacity as well as more personalized programming options. You will also secure a better warranty that will save you money in the long run.
